The program boasts close relations with the prestigious Fraunhofer group of research institutes, as well as many industrial affiliations and numerous universities. A continuous project contract at the Fraunhofer Institute IAIS or other approved institution gives students the opportunity to actively participate in and profit from current research and development work. This work runs in parallel to the coursework and covers half of the total ECTS credits.
Students have the opportunity to carry out reasearch work associated with industrial entities such as IAIS, Kuka, IPA, GPS, BGIA, Infineon, and Bertrand.
A transfer of students, and sometimes even faculty, to and from the University of Oebero, Sweden, and the University of Toronto, Canada, provides students with great opportunities for more diverse exposure and interaction.

RoboCup@Home: Robotic applications that can assist humans in everyday life
In the context of these projects, student R&D projects have been defined; some of them take place directly at the university, some of them at the cooperating partner companies.
The program maintains the RoboCup lab as well as the XPERO lab. In addition, labs such as the Immersion Square and the Computer Vision lab are also available should students wish to persue their work within these fields.
A well-equipped lab was set up and dedicated exclusively for our students at the Fraunhofer Institute IAIS. Thus, sophisticated R&D projects and Master's projects become possible using the state-of-the-art technology with robots deployed at the Fraunhofer Institute IAIS. Students receive individual support from scientists who provide up-to-date topics and problem statements from their current research and development projects.
Some examples of research topics have included the development of hardware, software and mechanical components for a team of robots participating in RoboCup Soccer as well as @Home. A variety of mobile robot platforms allow the study of various problems, from the development and integration of novel sensors to the study of wireless communication and cooperation under real-time conditions.
